A Lucky Horseshoe

Limulus polyphemus, the horseshoe crab, has thrived on ocean floors since long before dinosaurs trod the earth.  This ancient critter is not actually a crab, but a descendant of the trilobites, found in Earth's oceans 544 million years ago.

It's also Mr. Spock's closest relative on earth, sharing the Vulcan's copper-based blood.

I saw them all the time along the Jersey Shore, where I grew up, but this is the first one I've seen in Florida in the 26 years I've lived here.

Train travel in India

Because of our tight budget, we spent most of our time travelling on train, not on plane or even on the bus. The train expense is not cheap but surprisingly cheap, especially the Sleeper Class. It's the cheapest one and apparantly the most interesting way to see India.

First about the smell, you can really smell India there. Really typical. And you can never get used to it. I had to hold my breathe each time I wanted to pass any compartment.

Secondly, travelling on train helps you practice your tolerance a lot. You will notice that you will be less frustrated day by day when finding yourself covered by dirt all over but no water left to wash. You will be less angry when you find someone already lying in your own sleeper berth, to add up, he even pretends dead with the hope you will give up on him and let him unofficially invade your berth.

Thirdly, any Indian would like to talk to you. They're overfriendly. In case you choose not talking to them, your travelling ends up really boring.

Last but not least, "Chai, chai" cry from tea seller walking along the ailse is one important part of the whole "travelling-on-train-in-India" thing.

Well, it may be annoyingly interesting to some people, it depends on how people see things.
To me, it's worth spending many hours experiencing it after all.

Aerial Combat

DSC_5541, originally uploaded by CLJahn.

A Great Blue Heron and an American Egret vie for the same fishing ground, and spent a few minutes chasing each other around in a wild dogfight.

I was shooting with my Vivitar 500mm f/8 lens, which meant that not only did I only have a 5 degree field of view, but it's a manual focus lens. This is the only shot I got of the aerobatics, and it was out of focus.

So I ran it through Photoshop's posterization filter to try and create an image that captured the essence of the moment while overcoming the focus issue.

Crazy Dog

crazy dog!

Look at the crazy dog under the bullock cart following it in the middle of National Highway. Guys, I watched for 10 minutes and this dog was strictly following it.
Well, should I call this dog as Sherlock Holmes or an intelligent one who wants to travel on highway ?

Ibis

This white ibis seems to be eying the fisherman's bobber dangling off the limb above it. He's actually just preening.

On Ecclesiastes

The measure of a person is not

in the control they exercise upon creation,

but in their response to the influence of God upon them

for creation.
