Long Exposure Photography : Thunder Strike

Exif Data
Camera : Canon Powershot A3300IS
f-stop : f/3.2
Exposure / Shutter speed : 15seconds
IS0-80

We always watch Thunder Strike , and we wonder how to capture them as they strike within seconds before  you adjust your camera and click them.
Thunder Strikes are mostly captured with Long exposure settings.

Long Exposure Photography is nothing but increasing your shutter speed and aperture level.

  • How to adjust shutter speed and aperture value ?
Most of the digital camera's today have various effects available , my Canon Powershot A3300IS has one of the effect known as "Long Shutter Speed". Dslr's and other point and shoot camera's also have Manual mode available on their dial.
You just have to increase the shutter speed so that when you release the shutter maximum light can be captured during this duration.
I have used 15sec shutter speed available on my cam , this was maximum shutter speed available on my Canon.
You must used a tripod or some stable surface to avoid shaking the cam while capturing lightning strikes.
And most important you must have is patience to capture the best shot.
You must see where exactly lightning is striking repeatedly and keep your camera ready on tripod or a flat surface , as soon as you see the lighting striking you should release your shutter and let it capture the Lightning.
This is not easy for the first time but after practicing you can get an awesome shot !
I got this shot after several attempts.
Try it Out with firecrackers also.
Enjoy keep clicking !
