A Lucky Horseshoe



Limulus polyphemus, the horseshoe crab, has thrived on ocean floors since long before dinosaurs trod the earth.  This ancient critter is not actually a crab, but a descendant of the trilobites, found in Earth's oceans 544 million years ago.

It's also Mr. Spock's closest relative on earth, sharing the Vulcan's copper-based blood.

I saw them all the time along the Jersey Shore, where I grew up, but this is the first one I've seen in Florida in the 26 years I've lived here.
