Can I Delete my Skype Account?

Currently, it is not possible to delete a Skype account.  Once created, a Skype account/username will remain indefinitely in Skype servers or database.   So if users no longer have the interest in using his or her account, they just need to abandon their Skype account.   The same goes if they wish to create a new one.  They just need to disregard their original username and register a new username/account.

Moreover, listed below are some suggestions that Skype users can consider before abandoning their accounts.

1.        Cancel any existing subscriptions and request to refund your remaining credits.  You can visit this page (How do I cancel my subscription?) to learn how to deactivate subscriptions, or contact Skype (contactus@skype.net) to request refunds.

2.       In the Edit You Profile Section (Skype >> Profile >> Edit Your Profile), you can delete and/or change the details you registered in your Skype account so no one could identify you as the former owner of that username.  You leave the values or fields blank, or just enter imaginary information (especially if you are certain you will no longer use that account).

3.       Users can also change the email address registered in their accounts, so they won’t be receiving any Skype related emails to their email address (How do I change my email address, or add another email address to my profile?).  However, if you choose this option, it may no longer be possible for you to request for a new password in the future if you put an imaginary email address.  So if you have a secondary email address, just replace the original one with it.

4.       You can also enter a note in the “Mood Message” or “About Me” section regarding that account.  For example, you can put the phrase “Account is no longer active, please contact me @......”, or “Account no longer in use, my new account username is ….”.  This will help other users who might be searching for you in Skype to know that your account is no longer in use, and to reach you through your new contact details or Skype account.

Furthermore, inactive accounts or those accounts which have not been used in the last 6 months will also be removed in the Skype search contacts results.
