Surrounded by the World’s Biggest Outdoor Gear Playground

On November 17thSplore’s EVOLVE Project was invited to tour
the Black Diamond Distribution Center in Salt Lake City, UT.

The purpose was to introduce the students to entry level jobs in the outdoor industry. Four Distribution Center (DC) managers gave us the rundown of the employee structure and the systems Black Diamond uses to distribute their goods around the world. We learned a ton about how goods are shipped and what it takes to work for Black Diamond. This is their story…

So there we were; 8 EVOLVE students, two occupational therapy students, one social work student and me: surrounded by the world’s biggest outdoor gear playground. Led by four managers of the Black Diamond Distribution Center we clawed our way around the wilds of the DC learning what it takes to work in that jungle of metal and plastic. The students were also given the inside secrets of how the gear of Black Diamond migrates around the world and gets to your door.  After taming the skills necessary to navigate the maze of gear bins, the students had mastered the ability to locate items, wrangle them into boxes and get them ready to be shipped.  All the trekking made us hungry, it was back to base (break room) for pizza and some bouldering with our new comrades of the gear jungle.

Thank you Black Diamond for allow us to come and tour your facility. It’s wonderful to have such great companies in our backyard.
